The Art of Ceremony Personalization

Park Memorial • October 12, 2021

For many, art is an expression of the heart and the soul: an expression of those things for which words do not do justice.

“Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life"

- Pablo Picasso

So, too, after a loved one passes, art can become a medium to express grief and the feelings of the heart that have no words.

When planning a funeral at Park Memorial, our funeral directors ask to hear stories about your loved one. What did they love to do? What made them laugh? What lessons did they teach you? What brought them joy? These questions, and the stories shared will help our team suggest ways to personalize your loved one’s funeral. Was your loved one passionate about art? Then you might consider incorporating an art class into the reception following the funeral service. Our Reception Centre is perfectly equipped to host a variety of art media classes to pay tribute to your loved one.

If you are grieving the loss of a loved one and are looking for a unique avenue to express and explore your grief among others who are also walking their own grief journey. Consider joining our monthly Art for the Grieving Heart events where guests are led through a facilitated craft with roots in grief, and then gather for an informal grief discussion, led by a grief professional. Here is what one of our past guests had to say about these events:

“A moment of peace to grieve in your own comfort with those around you who feel the (same) pain for different reasons but (are) still there. The event helps to unlock emotions you may hide day in and day out”. ~Guest of Art for the Grieving Heart

Art speaks when words can’t.

When safe gatherings can be held once again, you will find dates and times for Art for the Grieving Heart and all other Park Memorial Grief Support Events on our Coming Events page.

August 30th was marked as National Grief Awareness Day, and while we missed the official calendar date, we reflect on this truth: grief doesn’t live on a calendar. It doesn’t circle one day in August or only come up during anniversaries and holidays.

My Dearest Daughter, as I write this letter, I can already feel the weight of my absence pressing upon you. There is so much I wish I could have told you, so many moments I wish I could have shared with you. But now, as you face the daunting task of being my Executor, I realize how much I have failed to prepare you for what lies ahead.

Being named the executor for a loved one is both an honour and a significant responsibility. As you step into this role, it is understandable to feel overwhelmed by the myriad of tasks and decisions that lie ahead. While the process can be complex and time-consuming, it is essential to approach it with warmth, empathy, and unwavering professionalism.
