One Blood Donation

Park Memorial • May 27, 2026

Countless opportunities to help someone in need.

There are some numbers that are simply difficult to comprehend.

A single blood donation can contain approximately:

  • 1 trillion red blood cells
  • 40 billion platelets
  • Trillions of plasma proteins and particles that help support healing, clotting, and immunity

All from one person. In one hour. With one decision to help.

Recently, members of the Park Memorial team gathered once again to donate blood together at Canadian Blood Services — something that is becoming a meaningful tradition for our team.

While the science behind blood donation is remarkable, what continues to move us most is the humanity behind it.

It is coworkers encouraging one another before their appointments (Our staff member, Cecilia is the queen of the hydration reminders).
It is the quiet bravery of first-time donors.
It is conversations shared over snacks afterward.
It is a donation made in memory of someone deeply loved and missed.
It is the understanding that although we may never meet the person receiving our donation, we are still connected to them through an act of care.

In the work we do at Park Memorial, we witness every day how deeply people show up for one another during life’s most difficult moments. Blood donation feels like another extension of that same spirit — people helping people, often quietly and without recognition, simply because someone else may need them.

This donation day also reminded us that community support comes in many forms. From healthcare professionals and volunteers, to encouragement from friends and coworkers, to our team member Nic’s service dog-in-training, Lumina who brought smiles and comfort throughout the clinic, every person present played a role in creating a compassionate and welcoming experience.

We are grateful to Canadian Blood Services for the care they provide and for the opportunity to contribute in a small but meaningful way.

And we are incredibly proud of our team members who rolled up their sleeves to help keep Canada’s Lifeline strong.

Because sometimes the most extraordinary things begin with something very simple:

Showing up for one another. ❤️🩸

Being seen is one of the most meaningful gifts we give our loved ones. After someone dies, families often find themselves searching for more than paperwork and photographs. They search for stories.

Sometimes grief reveals more than we expected. Sometimes grief brings more than absence. Sometimes it brings discovery.

Last weekend, our team had the honour of joining the Pilgrims Hospice Society for their annual Hike for Hospice fundraiser — alongside families, friends, and members of our community who understand, in their own way, what it means to carry loss.

At Park Memorial, we believe the spaces where families gather to remember and honour a loved one should feel welcoming, comfortable, and cared for — in every season.

Last night, our Park Memorial team gathered for a blood donor evening. Nine team members rolled up their sleeves — including three first-time donors — and gave something simple, yet profoundly powerful: time, compassion, and a small donation that has the potential to save lives.

It comes from a place of love. A desire to honour a wish, to keep things simple, to spare people the formality of a gathering they might not have wanted. And that impulse is not wrong. But there is something important that often goes unconsidered in that decision.

At Park Memorial, we often meet families at one of the most emotional moments of their lives. And while we are honoured to walk alongside them in their grief, there is one sentence we hear far too often.

The Christmas season is often filled with sound: the laughter of family gathered close, the hum of familiar carols, the gentle rustle of wrapping paper and tradition.

Grief has no timeline, no rulebook, and no “right way” to move through it. At Park Memorial, our monthly grief-support programs — Art for the Grieving Heart and Men’s Grief Support* — were created to offer a safe, welcoming space for anyone navigating loss.
