Canadian Mental Health Edmonton Region

Urgent Announcement: Youth Suicide Grief Support Program Relaunches on September 11th 2024

Attention Edmonton community! The Canadian Mental Health Association - Edmonton Region is pleased to announce the relaunch of its impactful Youth Suicide Grief Support Program, starting tomorrow (September 11, 2024)! This vital program is designed to support youth aged 12-25 and their families/caregivers who have experienced a loss due to suicide.

“It isn't that you didn't reach for them. It's just that it was too hard to see your hand in the blackness”.

The in-person weekly sessions will be held at our Prosper Place location, 10455 172 Street NW, Edmonton. These sessions provide a safe space to process grief, learn new tools, and receive much-needed support. Additionally, information sessions will introduce participants to the group, allowing them to ask questions and determine if the program is the right fit for them.

Time is of the essence! Register now to secure your spot and take the first step towards healing. Last night, our Park Memorial team gathered for a blood donor evening. Nine team members rolled up their sleeves — including three first-time donors — and gave something simple, yet profoundly powerful: time, compassion, and a small donation that has the potential to save lives.

It comes from a place of love. A desire to honour a wish, to keep things simple, to spare people the formality of a gathering they might not have wanted. And that impulse is not wrong. But there is something important that often goes unconsidered in that decision.

At Park Memorial, we often meet families at one of the most emotional moments of their lives. And while we are honoured to walk alongside them in their grief, there is one sentence we hear far too often.

The Christmas season is often filled with sound: the laughter of family gathered close, the hum of familiar carols, the gentle rustle of wrapping paper and tradition.

Grief has no timeline, no rulebook, and no “right way” to move through it. At Park Memorial, our monthly grief-support programs — Art for the Grieving Heart and Men’s Grief Support* — were created to offer a safe, welcoming space for anyone navigating loss.

August 30th was marked as National Grief Awareness Day, and while we missed the official calendar date, we reflect on this truth: grief doesn’t live on a calendar. It doesn’t circle one day in August or only come up during anniversaries and holidays.

Last night, under the golden light of the soft evening sun, we gathered for the first in our summer series of Grief Walks—gentle steps taken in the company of others, held by nature, memory, and quiet connection.
