Obituary for Helen Rhodes

Helen Rhodes
Helen Rhodes, passed peacefully on January 10, 2021, of COVID complications. She was born in Oblapy, Ukraine, came to Canada in April of 1939 at the age of 5 with older brother John (Ivan) and parents Paraska (Pearl) and Nikita Tyschuk . Arrived in Canada onboard the ship Battoria, one of the last ships to leave Europe before the second world war. They landed at Pier 21 in Halifax, NS, travelled by train to Entwistle, AB. where they were met by our mother’s parents and her brother who immigrated to Canada 10 years previously to homestead in the Rocky Rapids area. They lived with Mom’s family for about a year until they were able to purchase a farm in the Brightwood area.

Helen attended a one room school in Moon Lake until grade 8, a 2 mile walk from the farm. Grade 9 and 10 she went to Entwistle by bus. After grade 10, Helen obtained secretarial training at Alberta College, then hired by Edmonton Flying Club. That is where she met her flying instructor husband, Gordon Rhodes. They were a handsome pair!

After several years of office work, owning and managing a couple of hair salons, Helen took up Real Estate. She was a successful realtor for about 30 years; enjoyed her work because of the freedom and flexibility it gave. She cherished her walks in the Victoria Park area near where she lived.

Helen was predeceased by her father, mother, brother, John and younger sister, Linda McNeil. She leaves three sisters, Nancy Gall, Vera Semeniuk and Laurie Taschuk; numerous nieces and nephews both in Canada and the Ukraine.

Cremation will take place at Park Memorial Funeral Home with internment in the spring at Evansburg Cemetery where her parents were laid to rest.
We extend thanks to the Jasper Place Continuing Care facility for their dedicated care of Helen in her final years. The family, gratefully decline floral tributes and request that donations be directed to a charity of choice.
