Condolence From: Phyllis Basaraba
Condolence: Dear John’s daughters and all the family, We want to convey to you that we were very sad to hear the passing away of you father, Dido and brother. Cousin John held a very special place in my heart. When he and his wife returned from from Ontario, John and I communicated by email or phone quite frequently. He had a very sharp memory and related the past historical events that took place on the Ruthenia farmstead south east of Smoky Lake. When he described or explained a situation you could almost feel that you were there. His stories were so vivid. He told me how he would ride to Smoky Lake school on a horse during the winter months and where he would stable it for the day. Such interesting events were always a pleasure to hear. I asked John many questions - mostly about his grandparents and my great grandparents Ivan and Varvara Basaraba as I wanted to know more about our ancestry. We shared so things - Ukraine, living on the farm long time ago, our relatives far and wide. He always would keep in touch with the numerous relatives. An Oral Historian so aptly describes John. John’s memories shall dwell in the hearts of those who were blessed to know him. Again I must say that I was fortunate to interact with John over the past years as I learned so much from him. The knowledge I gleaned was priceless. Our deepest heartfelt condolences. With love, Phyllis and Vicky Basaraba
