Private Condolence

I had to delay my writing this condolence as the sadness and loss of the last few months has been, almost overwhelming. When I attended the service with my brother and sister, I had to admire the grace with which Aunty Irene, Lisa and Len, and all the family held themselves, on such a sad occasion. As I stood in the viewing Room, a precocious little girl of 4 or 5 years approached, introduced herself and asked if I would hold her hand. I gave her my hand and she started pulling me toward...I don't know where? I began to ask her where her mom was just as a relation to her, came and took her back to her mom and dad. It was a sweet little moment that replaced the grief of the occasion, with a smile for a brief time. I can tell you my Uncle Wilf was one of the most generous people I have known, but that wouldn't adequately describe how generous he was. I can tell you how he loved getting together with family and friends to share laughter and play songs, but again, that doesn't really describe him adequately. I can paint a picture of a scene many years ago his farm near Thorhild, of him and a very hungover nephew, wearing my Sunday best (outfit and hangover courtesy of a Ukrainian wedding the night before), driving down the highway at 50 kph (the old trucks max speed because of a cracked manifold sounding like a tank), with a load of grain to make into chop. Oh, and my outfit was topped off with a pair of Wilfs rubber boots, because I was helping him load grain and feed his animals...and holding my rifle in the front seat because it was deer season and just in case. There, I think that about completes the picture! Thankfully no police engaged us in a slow speed chase and the people of Thorhild accepted the scene before their eyes as...normal. That was but one moment in time, I got to share a weekend with my Uncle Wilf on his farm. He was truly happy there and loved his animals. When the service ended, there was a wonderful music and picture journey through his life. The pictures of him as a young man, the joy on his and Aunty Irene's faces as they began their life, and the pictures of Lisa and Len, their children and grandchildren. All of those smiling faces in those pictures, the result of Uncle Wilf and Aunty Irene's love. My tears were both of happiness for him, his life, accomplishments...and then for his passing. And I thought back to the precocious little girl a hour earlier, that must have been Uncles Wilf's great grandchild. I know how impossible it is for me to assuage your grieve at this time, but I hope my sharing the story of a weekend on my Uncle Wilf's farm long ago....might help. Even if for only a moment. On behalf of the Carriere family, please accept our deepest sympathy for the loss of your Husband, Father and Brother.
