Obituary for Olive Margaret Virginia Harrison

It is with a heartbreaking sadness that the family of Margaret Harrison (nee Morlidge) announce her passing on Wednesday, November 21, 2018, at the age of 94 years.
Margaret died peacefully in her sleep at her home at Holyrood Extendicare in Edmonton, Alberta. Margaret was born in Lloydminster to Ernest and Bessie Morlidge, who died when Margaret was three. Margaret loved her stepmother, Hannah Morlidge and supported Hannah as the eldest daughter of twelve children. Margaret attended the Lloydminster High School, worked a few jobs, and then married her handsome husband, Albert Edward Harrison, in 1948. Having never before lived on a farm, Margaret immediately became a farmer’s wife, living first in Blackfoot, then McLaughlan, and then in Fawcett, Alberta. She loved all the animal husbandry and jarring and cooking and pickling and sewing and mending and darning that coloured that time of her life. They had seven children, Marjorie (Morrison), Bryan, Douglas, Fran (Johansson), Hubert, Christine (Roberts), and Linda (Gates).
After both her husband, Eddie, and then her son, Douglas, died on the farm, Margaret gathered her children and returned to Lloydminster. She was smart and careful and strong and independent, and she built a life for herself and her kids in the city where she was born. She appreciated the emotional support from both her parents and Eddie’s parents, and from close friends who would drop in for a cup of instant coffee and a home-cooked treat.
An independent woman, Margaret supported the family through her job in housekeeping at the Lloydminster Hospital. Always friendly, Margaret made good friends and always agreed with the kind folks who pointed out to her how lucky she was to work in such a clean place. Community was always important to Margaret, whether it was the UCW or the Quota or the Minus One, or Fellowship Village where she lived for twenty-five years after she retired from the hospital. Margaret was often seen behind a table in the Lloyd Mall selling raffle tickets for any club in town who had her number and called. Intelligent and interested in the world, Margaret traveled to England, New Zealand, and places in the U.S. and Canada. Margaret was devoted to her family – hosting large family gatherings, knitting socks, scarves, toques, afghans, baby blankets, sweaters, and vests, and cooking meals for all of us. She loved having a cold beer with brothers-in-law and late night rum with sons and sons-in-law. She loved being outside and gardening. Many yards in Lloydminster have a piece of her old rosebush from the family house on 49th Avenue.
Margaret is predeceased by her husband, Albert Edward Harrison (1962); her sons, Douglas Allen Harrison (1966) and Hubert Leslie Harrison “Sweetpea” (2015); sons-in-law, Will Johansson (2011) and Ian Morrison (2014); brothers, Ernest, Arthur and Oliver; and sister, Cordelia. She is survived by her children, Marjorie, Bryan, Fran, Christine and Linda; six grandchildren, Douglas Morrison, Wanita Hunter-Oglow (Morrison), Gary Johansson, Edward Roberts, Dustin Gates and Luke Gates; and five great-grandchildren, Taylor, Jaden and Abbie Hunter-Oglow, Alissa Johansson, and Harlem Roberts. We will miss her forever.
A Memorial Service will be held to remember Margaret on Friday, November 30 at 11:00 a.m. at Grace United Church, 4708 – 50 Avenue, Lloydminster, Alberta.
