Obituary for Monica Cheladyn (Mudry)
On July 3, 2017, Monica Cheladyn (nee Mudry) passed away peacefully at the age of 99 years. She was born in Prelate, Saskatchewan on June 27, 1918, and later moved to Saskatoon, and then Edmonton, with her parents. Monica lived life to the fullest. As a young woman, she modelled and performed with the Edmonton Opera. Then in 1943, Monica married Dr. John Cheladyn. They raised 3 sons (John, Osep, and Mich) and were active members of St. John’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Edmonton. Monica was also a member of the Ukrainian Women`s Association of Canada for over 70 years. Monica supported her husband as he established his chiropractic career, and for several years they ran the movie drive-in in Olds, AB on the weekends. Monica and John also loved to camp with friends and family until his passing in 1972. For many years, Monica worked as a legal secretary for Dmytro Yanda, and then as a medical receptionist for Dr. Donald McMillan. Monica loved to travel. She and her best friend, the late Rose Malanchuk, enjoyed touring through Europe, South America, and Asia, as well visits to Phoenix and Las Vegas. In her later years, Monica enjoyed spending time with grandchildren and visiting with the residents at Kiwanis Place Lodge.
The family would like to extend deep felt gratitude for the kind and compassionate care by the chaplain, staff, and caregivers during the last three years that Monica was a resident at the Edmonton General Continuing Care Centre (EGCCC), Unit 7Y.
